Accessing Healthcare Emergency Services

Our searchable database of educational links and resources for teachers, parents and students of Primary and Secondary Schools in Trinidad and Tobago. Helpful links and information for stakeholders in education in T&T.

Healthcare is provided free of charge to everyone in Trinidad and Tobago, including non-nationals. Health Centres, District Health Facilities and Hospitals provide different services and levels of care. The information on this page will help you determine the best place to access the care you need.

How do I access health care?

Health services are offered at all health facilities on a walk-in basis.  You do not need to make an appointment.  You must have a referral from another health facility to access treatment at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, with the exception of accident and emergency care.

In the event of an emergency that requires an ambulance to transport sick or injured parties to any of the nation's public health facilities, please dial the ambulance hotline at 811 for immediate assistance.

When should I visit the Accident & Emergency (Casualty) Departments?

Accident and Emergency (Casualty) Departments are located at the Port of Spain and San Fernando General Hospitals, the Sangre Grande and Scarborough Regional Hospitals, the Point Fortin Area Hospital, the Paediatric Department of the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, and all District Health Facilities.  Accident and Emergency departments deal with life-threatening illnesses and accidents.  Some of these conditions include motor vehicle accidents, gun shot or chop wounds, severe bleeding, asthmatic attacks, allergic reactions, severe chest pain, near drowning, falls or blows to the head, high fever in babies and toddlers, excessive vomiting, severe abdominal pain, severe burns, overdose of pills, and ingestion of toxic substances.
