The General Certificate of Education (GCE) is an internationally recognised certification at the secondary level that is usually required to attend university or study for professional qualifications.  GCE examinations are set by the University of London International Examinations, and are available at the Ordinary (O) and Advanced (A) Levels.

  • O Level subjects include Art and Design, Spanish, Hindi, History (Syllabus B) and Religious Studies.
  • A Level subjects include Ancient History, Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, French, Government Politics, History, Law, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Pure Mathematics and Spanish.

In Trinidad and Tobago, the internationally recognised Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) is replacing the GCE.  GCE O Levels are no longer offered to private candidates and will not be offered to in-school (public) candidates after the May/June 2007 examination.  With the exception of the subject of Further Mathematics, GCE A Levels will not be offered to students in government or government-assisted schools after 2007 and are available to private candidates only through private-sector companies.  Please follow the link in the "Related Services" section on the left of your screen for more information on the CAPE.

Who can write the London GCE?

Anyone ten years of age and over can write the London GCE O Level or A Level Examination.

How do I register to write the GCE?

The registration process is different for private and in-school candidates.

  • In-school candidates are registered by their schools.
  • Private candidates must obtain and complete a GCE entry form, which can be picked up from the Ministry of Education Head Office.  Candidates writing both O Level and A Level subjects should complete only one entry form.

In-school and private candidates must be registered during January and February of 2007 for the GCE held in May/June 2007.

Any there any associated fees?

There are no fees associated with registering for or writing the GCE.
